WikiProject Film is a WikiProject dedicated to building comprehensive and detailed articles on Wikipedia about topics related to films. Please feel free to add yourself to the project.
Scope
[edit]The project generally considers all articles directly related to film to be within its scope, except that it does not include articles about actors, directors and filmmakers, which are within the scope of the Biography WikiProject and specifically the Actors and Filmmakers and Screenwriters projects.
Our primary work is concentrated in a number of broad areas:
- Films and film series
- Film characters
- Companies and organizations of note with a substantial relevance to films, including equipment suppliers, production companies, archives, institutes and educational facilities.
- Film awards, including individual ceremonies, award categories, and winner or nominee lists.
- Film festivals, including individual instances and ancillary bodies.
- Film equipment, technology, practice, and terminology.
- Significant historical locations and structures primarily used for filmmaking or exhibition.
- Film studies topics and notable film critics, theorists, and researchers.
- Genres, types, movements and periods of film; the cinematic histories of particular nations, regions and groups.
As of 29 December 2024, there are 195,806 articles within the scope of WikiProject Film, of which 676 are featured and 1,430 are good articles. These articles have the {{WikiProject Film}} template on their talk page.
Goals
[edit]- To standardize film articles on Wikipedia
- To improve Wikipedia coverage of films by adding, expanding and improving film articles
- To serve as a central point of discussion for issues related to Wikipedia film articles
- To provide the necessary framework to assist in bringing all articles within the project scope to the highest possible quality
Guidelines
[edit]The following are specific guidelines for articles within the scope of this WikiProject (in order of consideration for editors creating articles):
- Film notability
- Naming conventions for films
- Style guide – Currently, this page only covers articles about individual films. We expect to create additional style guides in the near future for other types of film-related articles, in consultation with the relevant task forces.
- Film infobox

Articles tagged for cleanup
[edit]A list of articles needing cleanup associated with this project is available. See also the tool's wiki page and the index of WikiProjects.
See the full CleanupWorklistBot list for this project, grouped by problem type (or on Alphabetic tab, by age, importance, and class).
The entire subject and Wikipedia's coverage of it is intended to be summarized in the Outline of film. It in turn is part of Wikipedia's outline system which is one of Wikipedia's main contents systems.
Please look it over and fill-in missing topics. If Wikipedia has an article or article section about those topics, please add links to them.
While analyzing the outline, please answer the following questions (and fix the outline as needed):
- What's missing?
- Is the structure of the outline (sections and indents) representative of the subject?
- Does the outline help understand the relationships between the topics presented in the best way possible?
The overall purpose of the outline is to help readers comprehend the subject by showing what belongs to it, and within the subject what belongs to what.
The outline is a taxonomy of the subject, and also serves as a table of contents and navigation aid to browse Wikipedia's articles (and article sections) about the subject.
It is also a useful tool for the WikiProject to analyze, plan, develop, and revise film-related material. It is a hub from which to organize related topics.
It was built as a "reverse outline", a structural model of an existing work, which in addition to being a summary of the work, can reveal the gaps and other weaknesses for revision purposes.
Please help improve it.
It's our bird's eye view.
Thank you.
Announcements and open tasks
[edit]Project organization
[edit]Due to the size, scope and number of interested editors working on articles, the project has added several additional structures to keep the work organized:
- Coordinators in charge of project organization and administration
- Departments for specialized tasks across the whole of the project
- Task forces to allow collaboration amongst editors interested in specific topics within the project-wide scope
Coordinators
[edit]The project coordinators are generally responsible for maintaining all of the procedural and administrative aspects of the project, and serve as the designated points-of-contact for procedural issues. They are not, however, endowed with any special executive powers, nor with any authority over article content or editor conduct.
The Lead Coordinator bears overall responsibility for coordinating the project; the Coordinators aid the Lead Coordinator and focus on specific areas that require special attention.

- Bovineboy2008 (talk · contribs)
- Karthikndr (talk · contribs)
More detailed descriptions of the coordinators' responsibilities, the history of the positions, and the process by which coordinators are selected may also be of some interest.
Participants
[edit]If you wish to join this project, please feel free to add your name to our Participants page!
In addition, participants and other Wikipedians who wish to show support for this project should feel free to add {{User WikiProject Films}}, or alternatively you can place a big userbox on your page by adding {{Films}}.
Departments
[edit]- Assessment focuses on determining and tracking the quality of Wikipedia's film articles; the resulting statistics are used to aid in recognizing excellent contributions and identifying topics in need of further work.
- Categorization acts as a central location for work on the category tree, including recommendations for hierarchy structuring, comments on categories for deletion, and general discussion about film categories.
- Core identifies our core articles and provides a rough idea of how well covered these articles are. (Anyone who brings a core article to FA automatically earns a Film Award.)
- Films based on books identifies articles which may require splitting the source material from the film adaptation into separate articles.
- Future films monitors articles on unreleased films to check for notability, assist in sourcing, and compile a release schedule.
- Missing films compiles lists of potentially notable films for which an article does not yet exist and sorts them by country and time period
- Outreach acts as a central location for various member outreach work, including project newsletters, recruitment and welcoming banners, and other related initiatives.
- Resources provides a guide to finding information for sourcing articles, whether through online/print sources or members' personal libraries.
- Review conducts both informal peer reviews of articles and other content; it also provides a centralized forum for viewing external reviews (such as featured article candidacies) within the project's scope.
- Spotlight displays positive contributions and accomplishments by the project as a whole, including featured content, DYKs (Did You Know?), A and GA-Class articles, and film barnstar winners.
Task forces
[edit]- Please discuss any proposals for new task forces with the project as a whole before creating them.
WP Film operates many task forces. Task forces are informal groups of editors gathered for collaborative work on a particular topic within the subject of film. They afford the advantage of allowing editors to organize their efforts around a topic without having to expend time and energy organizing and duplicating the overall structure, style, and guidelines for a descendant WikiProject which would be completely or mostly covered by the Films project. All users are encouraged to participate in any that interest them.
Editors interested in creating task forces should look towards creating a task force with a medium-to-large number of articles within its scope, or consider a higher-level scope if this cannot be achieved. (For example, less productive national cinemas may be better served by creating a collective regional cinema task force instead.)
Task forces should also have aroused a significant number of potential participants to warrant organizational overhead. The project, via consensus on the discussion page, will determine if a task force is to be created.
(It should be noted that task forces created prior to July 1, 2007 were moved from independent WikiProjects and should thus be considered "grandfathered" in.)

Potential task forces
[edit]Potential task forces - should only be created where there is specific demand from users
|
|
Multimedia task forces
[edit]If you wish to start a task force on a film which has spawned a multimedia franchise, you can add your proposal to the Media franchises task force proposals page.
Current collaborations
[edit]The current ongoing drive at WikiProject Film is the improvement of the Stub-Class articles from the Core article list. The aim is to improve these articles to Start-Class or better. The drive began with the 2011 update of the list, at which time 106 Stub-class articles remained. The charts below illustrate the progress being made in this drive.
Stub-class core film articles improved to start-class or better: 90.6% complete
All core film articles at start-class or better: 98.1% complete
Useful tags
[edit]- If you find, create or contribute to a film article, please paste {{WikiProject Film}} on the top of its discussion page with the appropriate parameters and add the article to the relevant lists within List of films. In addition, some parameters that can be pasted within the {{WikiProject Film}} template on the discussion page in order to request the addition of missing material are
|needs-infobox=yes
and
.|needs-image=yes
- If you find a stub article that has not yet been marked as a stub, add {{film-stub}} to the bottom of the article, or browse Category:Film stubs for sub-categories such as {{comedy-film-stub}}, {{action-film-stub}}, and other sub-stubs by subject or country. The article will then automatically be included in the film stubs category, where you can find plenty of stub articles to expand if you are itching to do something.
